MULTAN: Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf national organiser Shah Mehmood Qureshi has criticised 0.6 per cent withholding tax on bank transactions and demanded its immediate withdrawal.
Addressing a press conference at the press club here on Tuesday, he said that the PTI was with the traders on the issue of unjustified and unfair tax. He said that the withholding tax would promote cash culture instead of business through banks. The decision would bring extremely negative affects to the economy, he added. He said that the PTI had convened the party meeting in Islamabad on July 9 and the unjustified tax would be one of the agenda items.
Qureshi said that the ‘unjustified’ tax matter was discussed with party chairman Imran Khan. He said that the PTI would think about calling the assembly session on the particular issue. He said that the traders would start closing accounts in banks. All the commercial banks were already facing serious crisis of depositors and the new tax would discourage them. He said that 0.6 per cent withholding tax was feared to promote double taxation particularly for the salaried class. All the chambers of commerce and industry in Karachi, Faisalabad, Lahore, Gujranwala and other cities were unhappy over the government taxation culture, he added. He said that the government and the PTI had inked an agreement and the prime minister was bound to dissolute assemblies if rigging charges proved in the Judicial Commission. Shah Mehmood Qureshi revealed that PPP senior leaders from Gujranwala were going to join the PTI on July 9.
To a question, Shah Mehmood said that the PTI had paid DJ Butt beyond his expectation and if there were arrears it would be paid. He said that the PTI had paid the rent more than the cost of the equipments.
