BATTAGRAM: A former provincial minister Alamzeb Khan has accused the Khyber Pakhtun-khwa government of pressurising the district administration to rig the local government polls.Speaking at a press conference on Monday, he said that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) district chief Yousaf Khan Tarand was involved in rigging. He said that PTI should ask the Election Commission to probe rigging to clear itself of the allegation.

Man killed, passer-by injured in Nowshera

NOWSHERA: A man was shot dead and a passer-by sustained injuries in a firing incident in the district, police said on Monday.Accused Saleh Muhammad, Kiramat and their accomplices opened fire on Murad Ali in Marhati Banda in Nowshera, leaving him dead on the spot. They said a passer-by Shakir Khan was also caught in the fire and sustained injuries.

Jobless worker strangles three daughters in Faisalabad

FAISALABAD: A jobless worker strangled his three daughters at Chak 113/GB, Phalaiwala, on Monday. Irshad Ahmad had been jobless for the last six months as the factory where he worked was sealed due to non-payment of income tax. On the day of the incident, Irshad allegedly strangled his daughters Iman (8), Reshma (7) and Fiza (6). Irshad’s wife along with her son and another daughter had gone to Jaranwala to attend the wedding ceremony of her niece. Chak Jhumra police are investigating.

Freight train for China from 9th

LAHORE: Pakistan Railways in collaboration with the Iran Railways is going to start a ‘Container Special Train’ which will transport goods to and from China from June 9. It was told by Minister for Railways Saad Rafique at a press conference at the railways headquarters on Monday. The minister said the freight train would carry rice and other commodities to China while it will help import sulfur, coal-tar and other chemicals. The freight train will operate once a week with 24 carriage wagons to start with, which will be increased to 40 over a period of time. Iran will provide subsidised 2,000 litre fuel for the train at Rs15 a litre. Pakistan has expressed the need for 5,000 litres.

Woman, son electrocuted in Faisalabad

FAISALABAD: A woman and her six-year-old son were electrocuted at Ghulam Muhammadabad on Monday. Sughran Bibi was washing clothes in her house. When she tried to bring out the clothes from a washing machine, she was electrocuted. Her son Ayan, who was standing behind her, was also electrocuted when he tried to save his mother.

Inspector, six constables dismissed

PESHAWAR: The capital city police authorities on Monday dismissed an inspector for alleged corrupt practices and six constables for various reasons. According to a notification, Inspector Sabir Khan was dismissed from service for alleged corruption and poor investigation. It said constables Aurangzeb, Amir Nawaz, Rahatullah, Chan Badshah, Syar Mohammad and Zahid Shah were also dismissed.

TOBA TEK SINGH: A man shot dead his wife and injured his mother-in-law in Chak 363 GB on Monday. Ashraf and his wife Razia developed differences and on the day of incident he fired at and killed Razia in her parents’ house. He also shot at and injured her mother when she tried to save her daughter.
Two extortionists held in Kohat

KOHAT: The police arrested two extortionists involved in demanding huge amount from people over phone calls here on Monday, police sources said.A man, who recently returned from a Gulf state, told the police that he had received a call from unknown persons for extortion.The police launched investigation and arrested the accused identified as Yamin Akbar and Ibrahim who used to extort money from the people by pretending to be members of a banned outfit. The accused were shifted to an undisclosed location for interrogation.

Bajaur traders protest against robberies

The protesters said that robbers had deprived a trader of Rs3million near Khar Bypass. They asked the political administration to arrest the criminals forthwith. They asked the administration to ensure safety of the traders in Bajaur Agency.

Two children among three killed in capital road accident

ISLAMABAD: Three people including two kids died and seven wounded when a speedy car rammed into a roadside tree at Lake View Park Monday evening, police said. According to report a Corolla car bearing registration number IDE-311 was coming from Murree and heading towards Rawalpindi and it rammed into a tree near Lake View Park when the driver lost control over the steering because of over speeding. Three riders identified as Kherul Nisa (60), Sania (7) and 2-year-old Ahsan died on the spot while other seven members of the family including M Akram, Rimsha Rasool, Yasmin, Nazeeran Bibi, Akmal and Arslan residents of Misrial Road Rawalpindi wounded critically. Corpses and wounded people have been shifted to hospital.

Rally held to create awareness
about melting glaciers in Kaghan

MANSEHRA: A rally was held on Monday to create awareness about the rapid melting of huge glaciers owing to global warming in Kaghan valley. Non-governmental organisation Saibaan Development Organisation (SDO) and Hazara University (HU) had jointly organised the rally. The rally started from a glacier that is rapidly melting in Naran and ended at an open place after marching through various roads. The participants of the rally, including students of Hazara University, were holding banners inscribed with slogans. Speaking on the occasion, Prof Amjadur Rehman of HU said that it was the collective responsibility of government, NGOs and people to preserve environment particularly at scenic spots. “The deforestation, which is common in our region, is causing a great loss to our environment and if government wants to be part of efforts to fight against global warming then it should check deforestation,” the professor said. He said that volunteers of his organisation also collected garbage scattered in the city and near Saiful Maluk lake.

Gunmen shoot dead
eighth grade girl student in Batkhela

BATKHELA: Gunmen shot dead a girl student in Dargai tehsil of Malakand Agency on Monday, sources said. The sources said that Laiba, a student of grade 8th, was on her way home from the Government Girls High School in Haryanikot village when gunmen opened fire on her, leaving her critically injured. She was shifted to the Civil Hospital in Dargai where she succumbed to her injuries. The accused escaped after committing the crime. The personnel of the security forces and Malakand Levies reached the spot and launched a search operation. However, no arrest could be made. The Malakand Levies registered the case on the report of the deceased’s father, Daud Khan, against the accused, including Mohsin Khan, Israrul Haq, Muhammad Gul and Nizamul Haq. He added that the accused had sent a marriage proposal for her but she was too young to be married off.

Ehtesab Commission arrests officer

PESHAWAR: The Ehtesab Commission Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has announced that it has arrested an accounts officer of the Accountant General Office on corruption charges. A press release by the Ehtesab Commission said Sardar Mohammad, a grade 18 officer at the Accountant General Office, had been arrested for accumulating assets through illegal means. It said Sardar Mohammad had in the past served as District Accounts Officer at Nowshera. It added that Sardar Mohammad is on 14 days remand with the Ehtesab Commission.

Modi’s rule a threat to region, says Salahuddin

PESHAWAR: Commander of Hizbul Mujahideen Syed Salahuddin on Monday said that the rule of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi posed threat to the entire region. Talking to Jamaat-e-Islami provincial head Prof Mohammad Ibrahim at the Al Markaz-e-Islami, Salahuddin said that raising Pakistani flag in Kashmir was a referendum against the Indian occupation. He added that India had been supporting terrorism in Pakistan for long but now its intentions over the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor had further exposed it. Prof Ibrahim assured Salahuddin that his party would continue supporting the Kashmiri people till their independence. He condemned the Indian government for announcing head money on Salahuddin, saying nobody could dare arrest the Hizb leader.

LAHORE: Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Senator Sirajul Haq said that it was the responsibility of the Muslim world to stop the genocide of Rohingya Muslims and protect them. Speaking at a meeting at Mansoora on Monday, he said that Rohingya Muslims were being burnt alive and butchered but none of human rights bodies including the United Nations or the OIC had stepped forward to protect them. He stressed upon the Pakistan government to wake up the Muslim rulers from a deep slumber and also move a resolution in the UN for their safety and build public opinion for stopping their eviction from Myanmar.

FIR registered against PTI candidate

BANNU: The police registered a first information report (FIR) against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidate for tehsil council for snatching ballot papers from polling staff and police in Khandarkhel union council. The FIR was registered on the complaint of rival candidate Fidaullah Wazir, PTI worker Babar Naushad against PTI candidate Kifayat Rasool. The complainants said that Head Constable Gul Fayyaz had recorded his statement that more than 30 armed men forced their entry into the polling station at the Government Middle School Khunzar Gul Khan in Khandarkhel union council and snatched ballots at gunpoint. The cop had claimed that PTI candidate Kifayat Rasool was among the armed men. They demanded action against the accused and re-polling in the area. Meanwhile, candidates in Takhti union council also demanded re-election. They accused the winner of rigging. The candidates staged a protest rally outside the press club, demanding re-polling in Takhti union council.

Polio drive begins in Lahore

LAHORE: The city district government has kicked off a six-day polio drive in 74 sensitive union councils on Monday. District Coordination Officer has said that 197,498 children (from four months to two years of old) will be injected Polio Muscular Injection during the drive for the first time in the history of Punjab. The DCO said that 5,52 polio teams are taking part in this polio drive and town administrators of Data Ganj Bakhsh Town, Ravi Town, Samanabad Town, Allama Iqbal Town and Gulberg Town are monitoring the polio drive.

Crackdown on hoarders in Lahore

LAHORE: The city district government continued a crackdown on overcharging of edibles and imposed heavy fines on shopkeepers involved in overcharging here on Monday. The officials said the DCO has passed very strict orders to the price control magistrates to take immediate action against those chicken and meat sellers who were charging higher rates than the notified ones. They said on Monday special focus was given on chicken and meat sellers and price control magistrates raided 765 places and imposed a fine of Rs 88,200 on 79 shopkeepers.
