NANKANA SAHIB: People have been facing several problems due to shortage of doctors at the basic health units and the rural health centres in the district.
There are 48 basic health units in the district and of them 43 are without doctors and being run by dispensers. The five BHUs where the doctors are available are situated at Youngsinabad, Chandarnnagar, Panwaan, Chak Tiwana and Burala.
There are six rural health centres in the district, including Warburton, Rehanwala, Bucheki, Morr Khunda, Bara Ghar and Syedwala, which are facing severe shortage of the doctors while there is also no woman medical officer in the centres. The situation has left the people at the mercy of the quacks, who are playing with their lives.
When contacted, District Health Officer Dr Iqbal Hussain Wattoo said that the doctors had no attraction in remote areas of the district because they did not get hard area allowance. He said that Nankana was considered close to Lahore, therefore, the doctors were not provided hard area allowance. He said that there was shortage of residences and other facilities for doctors in the district.
