Symposium on eye diseases, blindness at PUMHSW

NAWABSHAH: People’s University of Medical & Health Sciences for Women (PUMHSW) organised a symposium on the diseases of eyes and blindness occurring due to Diabetes on Saturday.
Specialist doctors of Diabetes from different medical universities and colleges read their research papers and created awareness among the participants of symposium.
Chairman Department of Eye, Dow University of Health Science Karachi, Professor Shahid Wahab said Pakistan is at fourth number in Diabetes worldwide and the disease is spreading fast as general public has least sense and awareness about it. He said Diabetes not only affects kidneys, heart and other parts of the human body but the major affect is seen on eyes. He said blood freezes in eyes if sugar is not controlled, which creates swelling and ultimately patients turn blind. He said in order to prevent such problems the eyes of Diabetic patient must be tested twice a year or if he feels weakness in eyesight, the patient must immediately contact eye specialist.
Chairman Department of Eye, Benazir Medical University Larkana, Professor Shahid Jamal said Diabetic patient should not avoid treatment and the treatment and care should run side-by-side. He said the Diabetic patient should bind himself for daily walk and exercise.
Chairman Quaid-e-Azam Medical University Bahawalpur, Professor Rao Qamar, while addressing the symposium, said if Diabetes is diagnosed then care and exercise are its major treatment. He said the function of kidneys is affected due to diabetes and for that reason patient should visit doctor for the examination of kidneys. He said a majority of the diabetic patients do not payattention to their eyes, which is causing blindness. This problem is more in Pakistan than other countries of the world, he added.
Vice Chancellor People’s University of Medical and Health Sciences for Women, Nawabshah, Professor Azam Husain Yusufani in his address said the holding of symposium on the effects on eyes due to Diabetes is welcoming and doctors and students received precious knowledge from it. He said symposiums are held in this university on different diseases.
