100 blackbucks released in Lal Suhanra National Park

BAHAWALPUR: About 100 blackbucks have been set free in the Lal Suhanra National Park’s breeding centre to multiply the rare species.
The breeding centre was inaugurated by PML-N chief Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif in December 2011 and at that time, 432 blackbucks were donated by UAE ruler Sheikh Zayed, but now there were only 327 blackbucks at the centre. The deer breeding centre is spread over 8km radius. When Mian Nawaz Sharif inaugurated the centre, he promised to provide watchtowers and staff to protect the blackbucks, but the promise had not yet been fulfilled, sources said. They said staff was not taking steps to protect the blackbucks and there were only a few watchmen to protect the blackbucks from poachers and wild jackals. Moreover, the Wildlife Department is facing shortage of funds, they added. On the other hand, there are rumours of extinction of blackbucks in the centre, which are totally false. When contacted, Lal Suhanra National Park Administrator Liaqat Sulehri said there were a large number of blackbucks at the centre despite poor facilities. He said that they were doing their best to further increase the number of blackbucks.
