ISLAMABAD: The government has removed National Highways and Motorway Police (NH&MP) Inspector General (IG) Zafar Abbas Lak on Wednesday on multiple charges against him and ordered disciplinary action against him. He was asked to report to the Establishment Division as an OSD, sources said.

 

Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif took notice of the publication of a full-page advertisement in national dailies on government expenditure regarding message of congratulations to Mian Nawaz Sharif on becoming the premier, misusing the taxpayers’ money (Rs900,000), sources said.

 

Sources said the other charges were abuse of Road Safety, Reward and Welfare Fund (RSR&WF), unlawful distribution of luxury vehicles of NH&MP to his favourites with uniformed drivers of NH&MP and fuel and misappropriation in auction of vehicles of the department.

 

The outgoing IG NH&MP, violating orders of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, granted shoulder promotions to his favourite officers, sources said.Sources said that extensive misuse of authority was recorded during the auction of used vehicles of NH&MP on May 5, 2013, when six expensive vehicles among total of 40 were pronounced auctionable, and given to different officers and personal friends, including an ex-IG NH&MP, a DIG enjoying shoulder promotion, an AIG and ‘blue eyed friends’ avoiding orders of the communication secretary to hold the auction in abeyance.
