LAHORE: Defence-B Police have arrested two men including a cop of the Elite Force for thrashing a bakery worker allegedly at the behest of Punjab Chief Minister’s daughter on Oct 7. Some government circles, however, said the incident involved chief minister’s son-in-law.
A case No 641/12 has also been registered against 10 people including seven personnel of the Elite Force, a driver and two private guards of the woman on Monday (October 15, 2012) after a lapse of eight days of the incident. The FIR has been registered under sections 506, 148 and 149 of Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) on the complaint of bakery owner Umar Hussain, the son of Ghulam Hussain, a resident of 18-T, Phase-II, DHA.
The complainant told the police that a woman visited his bakery situated in T-Market, Defence, at around 1 pm on October 7, 2012 and demanded a cake. The employees of the bakery told her that she might visit after 3 pm, as the bakery was closed and employees were busy in cleaning it. However, it infuriated the visitor, and two persons, who appeared to be guards, came in the bakery, abused an employee, Irfan, and hurled life threats at him.
The complainant said at around 6pm, the same guards visited the bakery again, along with another person, identified the worker and took him outside the shop. Around 6 to 7 guards, already present outside the bakery, started thrashing Irfan and threatened to kill him if he refused to provide bakery items again.
The CCTV footage available at social media sites shows that the woman argued with the employee for over three to four minutes over Irfan’s refusal to provide the cake. The woman started harassing and abusing the poor bakery worker and insisted on buying the bakery items without any delay. The guards and policemen took the employee to a Vigo vehicle and threw him away him after giving him a good thrashing.
A senior police officer, requesting anonymity, confirmed that the woman was a close relative of the Punjab chief minister. He also confirmed that a civilian namely Zafar, the driver of the woman, and a head constable of the Elite Force namely Riaz have been arrested for further interrogation. He said the other accused would also be arrested on the pointation of the complainant. About delay in registration of the FIR, the officer said the issue was settled down by the two parties, but the case was registered on the directions of the CM.
The incident was highlighted on social media sites widely and it was criticised by a large number of people, as the footage was available at different websites.Punjab CM Shahbaz Sharif took notice of the torture of the bakery employee in Defence and ordered registration of a case against the responsible persons.
