First-ever LG polls in federal capital tomorrow

2,400 candidates vying for chairman, vice chairman and councillors seats; army, Rangers personnel deployed

ISLAMABAD: The first-ever local government (LG) elections in the federal capital will be held tomorrow, (Monday).
Electioneering for the polls ended on Saturday night at 12am. Candidates made their last-ditch efforts by carrying out door-to-door canvassing to convince the voters in their favour.
The capital territory has been divided into 50 Union Councils (UCs) and 640 polling stations have been set up at 326 buildings, of which 62 buildings have been declared most sensitive. The most sensitive polling stations will be guarded by Army and Rangers personnel deployed there.
At least 7,752 policemen including 3,720 personnel of Islamabad police will perform their duties on the polling day.
As many as 2,400 candidates are vying for the seats of chairman, vice chairman and councilors.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission of Pakistan has completed all arrangements in connection with the polls.
Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police Islamabad Tahir Alam Khan directed all police officials to ensure elaborate security arrangements in the federal capital on eve of polling day.
He issued these directions to them here at a meeting held to review security arrangements for the LG polls on November 30. The IGP said peaceful and conductive environment for voters will be on top priority of police so that they may cast their vote independently.
The IGP reviewed the law and order situation and meeting finalised an effective strategy regarding security for the elections in Islamabad.
The capital police chief directed all police officials to conduct complete checking of buildings before start of polling and maintain close liaison with Returning Officers for peaceful holding of elections.
He said that metal detectors should be used for checking and female cops should also be vigilant at women polling stations. He said that implementation on the code of conduct issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan would be ensured at every cost and display of weapons as well as aerial firing would be completely banned.
He said those violating the code of conduct will be dealt strictly and peace and tranquillity in the city will be ensured at every cost. The IGP said that every police official will have to demonstrate a responsible attitude and action would be taken in case of any violation in their respective jurisdiction.
Tahir Alam Khan also directed high vigilance at entry as well exit points of the city and said that contingents of the Pakistan Rangers and reserve police would also assist Islamabad police for effective security measures.
