PPP, PTI to act as combined opposition in NA

Khursheed says opposition not meant to dislodge elected govts but to strengthen democracy

ISLAMABAD: Two major opposition parties in the National Assembly — Pakistan People’s Party and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf — Tuesday decided to join their hands to play role as a combined opposition in the lower house of Parliament.
This understanding reached during a meeting between the Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah and PTI leaders Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Sarwar Khan, Dr Arif Alvi and Dr Shireen Mazari at the Parliament House.
The meeting lasted over an hour in the Chamber of Opposition Leader Syed Khursheed Shah in which both the parties decided to act as a combined opposition to raise voice on national and public issues and to give a tough time to the government in the House.
Talking to the media after the meeting, Khursheed Shah said the meeting was a good omen for continuity of democratic traditions.He said the aim of the opposition in democracies was not to dislodge elected governments but to raise public issues and to strengthen democracy.
“The opposition will now play the role of a combined opposition in the National Assembly,” he added.PTI Deputy Parliamentary Leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi said as a combined opposition they will raise a joint voice in the National Assembly on the award of the National Finance Commission (NFC).
