ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Climate Change on Monday constituted an Investigative Group of Scientists to look into the causes of the searing heatwave spell in Karachi, in particular reference to the growing threat of climate change in the region. The former director-general of Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) Qamaruz Zaman Chaudhry has been selected as the convener of the committee.
According to the official notification, “The Investigative Group of Scientists shall thoroughly review the issue of heatwave especially in Karachi and submit its report to the climate change minister not later than two weeks.”
Minister for Climate Change Senator Mushahidullah Khan in his remarks said the group of experts would analyse and investigate the main causes of the recent heatwave in the country, especially in Karachi and propose ways and means to tackle these kinds of incidents in future.
“The report to be submitted by the experts group will help evolve a strategy for developing institutional capacity and formulate comprehensive recommendations to enhance understanding to respond to the similar situations in a befitting manner,” he said.
