MANDI BAHAUDDIN: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz candidate for the NA-108 by-election Mumtaz Ahmed Tarar has swept the election with a margin of over 37,000 votes.
According to latest reports, Mumtaz Tarar got 77,884 votes, according to unofficial results. His PTI opponent Muhammad Tariq Tarar obtained 40,570 votes. Asif Bashir Bhaghat of the PPP got 29,618 and PML-Q’s Hamza Nasir Iqbal got 10,796 votes. Riaz Farooq Sahi of the Jamaat-e-Islami got only 7,662 votes after counting was done in 278 out of a total of 289 polling stations.
During the by-election, PTI supporters of MPA Tariq Sahi exchanged harsh words with PML-N former Nazim Rana Sarfraz Ahmad and beat the PML-N supporters. The PTI workers were enraged when some PML-N workers put a bat (the PTI symbol for election) on fire in front of the Sir Syed High School (Polling Station No 138). In response, the PTI workers uprooted the PML-N camp at Munshi Mohallah.
They also beat PML-N workers there. The PTI and the PML-N supporters exchanged fire at the Rakh Baloch polling station. As a result, three PML-N workers - Ijaz, Adil and another - were injured. PTI supporters Sajjad and Zafar Iqbal were also injured. All the injured have been admitted to the DHQ hospital. Notably, the residents of village Chak Mittha refused to cast votes in protest against the PML-N government which failed to launch any development project in their area.
