KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain on Monday said that a consensus opinion among the people living in the urban areas of Sindh was emerging that the creation of a new province was necessary for the resolution of issues.
He said that the people were of the opinion that the creation of a new province, whether it would be called Karachi province, urban province, Sindh One or Sindh Two, had become their destiny.
Altaf Hussain said this while talking to the MQM Coordination Committee in London and Pakistan and members of different wings of the party at Nine-Zero.He said, “The people of urban Sindh, who have been ignored and discriminated by successive Sindh governments for the past 67 years, are saying that they should have a separate province. This demand has become the heartbeat of people, whether Sindhis, Baloch, permanently settled Punjabis, Pakhtuns, Hazarewal, Seraikis, Gilgitis, Baltistanis or Kashmiris, who are living in urban Sindh.”
Altaf Hussain asked the people to suggest a good name for the new province as it was not the demand of the MQM. Hence people should suggest name for their province.Hussain said, “The people think that the foundation for a separate province in Sindh was laid on the fateful day in 1973 when a 60 percent quota for rural Sindh and 40 percent quota for urban Sindh was reserved by the rulers of Sindh.”
“This quota was initially reserved for 10 years but every successive military and so-called democratic government extended it and it still in vogue even in 2015.”“The people who have suffered under the yoke of this quota system are saying that a new province should be created on the basis of this very 60/40 percent quota,” he said and added, “They are saying that they will have a better life and prospect for progress if they get their province according to their 40 percent share.”
Altaf Hussain said the people of Urban Sindh had now decided that they would not hesitate in offering any sacrifice to get their province.A MQM spokesman said that the membership campaign “Connect with MQM” formally initiated all over the world including Karachi and a number of people had already filled the virtual forms available at MQM’s website www.mqm.org.
According to the details, the membership campaign started due to the people of various parts of the country who wanted to work for the 98 percent of deprived population of the country. He said that MQM chief Altaf Hussain directed the Coordination Committee to start a membership campaign for the wishful people who wanted work for MQM.
The statement said that the people, especially the expatriates welcomed the membership campaign and a huge number had already became MQM workers through the forms available at the website. He added that the forms were also available at MQM’s official Facebook pages.
