Pakistan seeks world community’s role in easing ME crisis

Civil and military leadership calls on UN, OIC to help find political solution

ISLAMABAD: The civilian and military leadership of Pakistan has urged the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the world community to play a constructive and proactive role for finding a political solution to the crisis in the Middle East for the sake of establishment of peace and stability in the region.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will establish contact with leaders of the Muslim states and friendly countries to discuss with them the situation in the area and make efforts for finding a peaceful way out of the crisis.
The civil and military leadership decided in a highest-level meeting on Monday that the mode and way of Pakistan’s practical assistance for Saudi Arabia in the ongoing conflict of Yemen would be determined immediately after the return of the country’s high echelon delegation that will be leaving for Riyadh today (Tuesday).
The delegation will include senior representatives of three services and Defence Minister Khwaja Muhammad Asif will head it while Prime Minister’s Adviser on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz will also be a part of it.
The meeting was held here at the PM House and chaired by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. It was the third such brainstorming huddle of the highest level.
The Chief of the Army Staff General Raheel Sharif, Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) Air Chief Marshal Sohail Aman, acting Naval Chief Vice Admiral Hasham bin Siddique, Director General Inter-Services Intelligence Lieutenant General Rizwan Akhtar Malik, Chief of the General Staff (CGS) of the GHQ Lieutenant General Ishfaq Nadeem Ahmad, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, Sartaj Aziz, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Special Assistant to PM for Foreign Affairs Syed Tariq Fatemi, Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhary and other senior officials attended the meeting.
Important decisions were made in the meeting whereas a comprehensive review of the present situation in the Middle East was also undertaken. Official sources stated that the meeting concluded that Pakistan remained firmly committed to supporting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Saudi Arabia in accordance with the aspirations of the people of Pakistan.It was emphasised that Pakistan stands committed to playing a meaningful role in arresting the deteriorating situation in the Middle East.
