SANAA: Pakistan’s Embassy in Sanaa has appealed to the media to play a responsible role and not portray Pakistan as part of the alliance currently attacking Houthis in Yemen.
Reports saying that Pakistan has sent jets or bombed Shia Houthi fighters’ positions are not true. The official position is that “we’ve been asked by the Saudis and we are considering the role in Yemen”.
There are 3,000 Pakistanis scattered all over the country and the embassy has asked all nationals to remain vigilant. The situation is volatile so movements should be restricted to absolutely necessary tasks.
The embassy says it’s open to provide assistance to any Pakistani who needs help — so far it has no plan to relocate anywhere else. The embassy has asked the Foreign Office to remain in touch with all parties, including the Houthis and interlocutors like the UN.
Last night’s bombardment wasn’t the worst seen by the people in Sanaa; that was in September during the Houthi coup that saw relentless explosions and gunfire.
There are no reports of Pakistani casualties so far.The Sanaa airport — both runway and control tower — has been destroyed so if evacuations are needed, it will be difficult.
The only possible solution is to persuade all parties to come to the table to negotiate a solution without foreign intervention.A senior diplomat says that the GCC has miscalculated the ramifications and these flames can have a domino effect in their own borders.
