ISLAMABAD/KARACHI: A Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) lawmaker, Nabeel Gabol, resigned from his National Assembly seat on Tuesday, citing personal reasons.
“I have resigned from my National Assembly seat today. I was a misfit in the MQM,” he said while talking to media persons after submitting his resignation at the Parliament House. “I am from a political family and have been in politics for the last 27 years. I will continue to be in politics,” he said.
Gabol said he had submitted his resignation to the assistant secretary at the National Assembly Secretariat, and was now waiting for the NA Speaker Ayaz Sadiq to accept his resignation.
He said he would hold a press conference today (Wednesday) to clarify things further. To a question, he said that nobody had the guts to do him any harm in Karachi.According to sources close to Nabeeel Gabol, he may also announce to quit the MQM during his press conference.
Meanwhile, the MQM parliamentary leader Abdul Rasheed Godail clarified that Gabol was still a part of the MQM, and will continue to be a member of the party and its Central Executive Committee.
“Gabol has resigned from his National Assembly seat today. He was a part of our party yesterday, he is still a part of our party today and will continue to be a member in the future,” he said.
Speculations were rife about Gabol’s rift with the MQM last month, but he suddenly appeared on the media and denied any such rift. Gabol left the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) in March 2013 and joined the MQM. He was twice elected from the PPP’s traditional seat of Lyari and claimed to be close to the late Benazir Bhutto but was sidelined after her death.A spokesman for the MQM said Gabol had resigned from the National Assembly due to personal reasons.
