ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Wednesday issued notices to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan and Secretary General Jehangir Tareen over a petition filed by an erstwhile close aide of Imran about alleged financial irregularities in party funds.
Both Imran and Tareen have been asked to appear in person or through their lawyers before the ECP on February 23 at 10:00am. The PTI has already denied these charges and claimed that there is a proper system of check and balance to stem chances of irregularities.
Akbar S Babar, who has been Imran’s top aide, PTI’s co-founder and former information secretary, had filed a petition in the electoral body, alleging financial corruption in handling the party funds and had shared some documents thereon with the ECP.
After having examined the petition, the ECP under Chief Election Commissioner Justice Sardar Muhammad Raza Khan held the petition maintainable and fixed February 23 for hearing and Wednesday issued notices to the PTI leaders in this connection.
