KARACHI: In a move that came as a surprise to the PPP as well as other political parties, President Asif Ali Zardari visited the residence of ex-Sindh home minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza in the Defence area on Wednesday, writes Tahir Hasan Khan.

The estranged Mirza is the husband of National Assembly speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza. The president reached the residence of ‘the angry-friend’ surprising all political circles as he had resigned in protest from the Sindh cabinet, his party office of senior vice president PPP Sindh and his provincial assembly seat.

The president’s visit was unofficial and without official protocol and only the small security staff a companied the president. However, the officials did not confirm the president’s meeting with Zulfiqar Mirza neither was any official handout released. But party circles confirmed that President Zardari visited the residence of Speaker National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza who returned from the US after treatment.

The ex-home minister, his son and wife avoided the media and did not confirm the meeting with President Zardari. The sources said that Dr Fehmida Mirza and Dr Zulfiqar Mirza were busy in their constituency and holding public meetings in Tando Bago, Badin, and rushed back to Karachi in the morning. This indicated that the meeting was scheduled and the family was ready to welcome President Zardari at Mirza House.

The party circles considered this meeting as part of President Zardari’s move to bring back angry leaders into the party fold before the election. Mirza’s resignation damaged the party position and the former home minister was emerging as a Sindhi nationalist leader and gaining popularity among the people of Sindh.
