KARACHI: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif on Friday said the new local government system was a conspiracy hatched by the government to divide Sindh and delay the general elections.

Talking to reporters after visiting the site of the factory where over 290 people were burnt to death in Karachi, he said the PML-N would not accept the new dual local government system. He said the PPP government was focusing only on the new local government system and not paying attention to the relief and rehabilitation of flood affected people. Nawaz said all decisions should be taken in consultation with other political forces, adding that the Sindh government should leave the issue of the local government system and provide relief to the flood hit people.

The PML-N chief said people were falling victims to target killings daily and the Hindu community was being forced to leave the country. “This is the failure of the PPP government which enjoys majority in the province,” he added.

Nawaz Sharif said there should be one local government system in the province because Sindh was not the fiefdom of two parties. He said all political and religious parties had opposed this dual system.

The former premier said his party had no contact with the PPP government, adding that other political parties were also willing to quit the coalition government following the PML-F. He said he had old relations with Pir Pagara and both the parties had the option to unite against the present regime.

Nawaz urged Hindu, Sikh, Christian and Parsi communities not to leave the country and assured them that the PML-N would provide them protection. The PML-N chief said the coalition partners had destroyed the whole country and now they were planning to contest the forthcoming general election as allies.

Nawaz asked PTI chief Imran Khan not to criticise his party and oppose the new local government system. To a question, he said his party wanted to form an alliance with the PML-F. He said the MQM was also willing to hold a meeting with him and he had directed Ishaq Dar to meet the MQM leadership and inquire about their agenda.

Meanwhile, the PML-N chief nominated Mumtaz Bhutto and his son Ameer Bux Bhutto as a member of the PML-N Central Committee. Mumtaz Bhutto had merged his SNF with the PML-N last year.

Nawaz Sharif also visited the residence of PML-N leader Salim Zia to offer condolences. During his visit to the site of the deadly fire incident, the PML-N chief said the non-implementation of relevant laws was a criminal act and the government was responsible for the tragedy.
