LAHORE: A heavy downpour, along with strong winds and hailstorm, hit various parts of the country including Lahore on Saturday, killing at least nine people and injuring dozens of others, mainly in roof collapses.

 

The heavy rain, however, disrupted the severe heat spell and brought down temperatures considerably. The cities lashed by the rains and windstorms included Lahore, Gujranwala,

 

Nowshera Virkan, Jhelum, Rawalpindi, Hattian Bala, Pasroor, Serai Alamgir, Malakwal, Sialkot, Gujrat, Hafizabad, Mandi Bahauddin, Wazirabad, Lalamusa, Kamoki, Kasur, Qila Didar Singh, Mustafabad, Laliani, Azad Kashmir, various parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, etc. In Lahore, 79 millilitre rain was recorded.

 

Our Reporter/Agencies add: A house collapsed in Baghpura locality of Lahore, leaving a girl dead. The dilapidated roof of the house of one Akram, a labourer, collapsed in Sheikhan Wali Street, Shalimar. As a result, Akram’s daughter, Rida, was buried under the debris. Locals gathered on the spot and informed rescue services. She was recovered from the rubble and rushed to hospital where doctors pronounced her dead.

 

Three people, including two women, received injuries when the roof of a factory situated on Khokhar Road collapsed due to rain. The injured were identified as Fazeelat Bibi, Shamim Bibi and Jamil.

 

In another incident, a man and his mother sustained injuries at F-Block, Johar Town, when the roof of their house collapsed. They were identified as Ali and his mother Zainab. In another incident, a rickshaw driver, Rehmat, sustained injuries in the Defence-A area when a tree fell on him due to stormy winds. A signboard installed at the Garden Town (Gulzar) underpass fell on two motorcyclists, leaving them seriously injured. They were identified as Saleem and Waseem. The incident also caused the worst traffic jam on Canal Road and its adjoining roads for hours.

 

The City Traffic Police badly failed to maintain the flow of traffic on city roads during and after rain which resulted in worst-ever traffic mess for over six hours. Two young brothers were killed in Gulraiz Colony area of Rawalpindi after the roof of their house caved in. The house owner, his wife and two other children were injured.

 

A shop was destroyed by rains in Gondanwala area of Gujranwala, leaving three labourers buried. Rescue teams pulled them out of the rubble and shifted them to hospital. One labourer later on succumbed to his wounds. A factory owner, Kashif Ali died, and his brother Azam and a labourer Qasim were injured when the factory roof collapsed. Naveed and Tauqeer were injured when the roof of a snooker club caved in.

 

In Nowshera Virkan, 22-year-old Qaisar died and four others were injured when the roof of their house collapsed. In Jhelum, 23 years old Ehsan drowned in a rainy nullah. In Hattian Bala suburban area Lamnian two minor girls were swept away by rain waters. One of them, Shanze (11), later died while Tahira was in critical condition.
