He expressed these views during a meeting with outgoing US Ambassador Cameron Munter, who called on the PML-N chief on Sunday. During the course of their meeting, the former prime minister emphasised the need for the US to reorient its policies towards Pakistan in a manner that the country’s democratic institutions could become stronger and its economy could become less dependent on foreign aid.

The US ambassador spokehighly of the people of Pakistan adding that he was deeply impressed by the enormous changes taking place, which made him confident that the country was moving in the right direction.

The meeting was also attended by Dr Marilyn Wyatt, the wife of the US Ambassador. Senator Ishaq Dar, leader of the opposition in the Senate was also present on the occasion.

INP adds: In an interview to a private TV channel, to be aired on Monday, Cameron Munter said the US was absolutely committed to democracy in Pakistan, adding that Pakistani democratic institutions needed to work with the Army.

In reply to a question, he said that Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan had both told him that they wanted better relations with the United States. He said, “I am a diplomat and always speak the truth.”

In response to a question regarding his impression about Pakistani politicians, Cameron Munter said all politicians had impressed him including Fazlur Rehman. “He is an impressive guy,” Munter remarked when specifically questioned about Maulana Fazlur Rehman.
