PESHAWAR: The governor of Afghanistan’s Kunar province alleged on Sunday that mortar rounds were fired into the Dangam district in his province from Pakistan yesterday, killing a person and causing losses to properties. Governor Syed Fazlullah Wahidi told the Afghan Islamic Press (AIP) that 78 rounds of heavy artillery fired from the Pakistani soil hit some deserted as well as residential areas yesterday. He said a person was killed, six houses were damaged and 26 cattle perished in the attack.

The governor said the heavy artillery fire had forced 28 families to leave their homes for safer areas. Pakistan has been rejecting all such claims made by the Afghan officials. Instead, Pakistan has been alleging that Pakistani militants based in Afghanistan’s Kunar and Nuristan province have been launching cross-border raids into Pakistani districts of Upper Dir, Lower Dir and Chitral and the tribal regions of Bajaur and Mohmand and causing human and material losses. In a recent cross-border attack, 17 Pakistani soldiers were killed, including some who were beheaded.

The previous day, Kunar governor had told the media that in a meeting with ISAF commanders he had handed over evidence that Pakistan had fired the mortar rounds made in Pakistan.
