ISLAMABAD: The PPP stalwart from Gujrat, Ch Ahmed Mukhtar, failed to muster support for his nomination for the slot of prime minister as the PML-Q chief Ch Shujaat Hussain raised a serious objection to his likely run for the coveted post.
Following the disqualification of Yusuf Raza Gilani by the Supreme Court on Tuesday afternoon, the ruling coalition met here at the Presidency in an emergent meeting to discuss the pros and cons of the Supreme Court’s decision to disqualify Gilani as the prime Supreme Court’s decision to disqualify Gilani as prime minister and MNA. President Asif Ali Zardari chaired the meeting.
“Being majority party, let the PPP nominate leader of the house, particularly when the outgoing prime minister was also from the PPP,” PML-Q President Ch Shujaat Hussain was quoted as saying in the all important meeting.
No discussion has reportedly taken place on this extremely political and wise proposal, as MQM, ANP and people from Fata endorsed the proposal laid before the meeting by Ch Shujaat Hussain, who was flanked by his party’s Secretary-General Mushahid Hussain Sayed.
The support of the PML-Q is extremely vital and key to the election to new leader of the house and if PML-Q withdraws its support to ruling coalition, the PPP-nominated candidate would be unable to secure majority of the 342-member National Assembly. However, Ch Shujaat Hussain being a seasoned politician has avoided putting up demands at this juncture when President Zardari needs his help to remain in power. The politics, however, is a rough ride for those who practise it.
The final name for the leader of the house will be announced in today’s parliamentary party meeting of the PPP, though the PPP would continue to face a lot of political problems in the future when its nominated prime minister would not write a letter to Swiss authorities for opening cases against President Asif Zardari.
“This problem or riddle would also be solved with the election of the new leader of the house, as the new prime minister would take his time before starting to implement decision of the apex court,” said a source in the PPP.
