ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani Friday called on President Asif Ali Zardari at Aiwan-e-Sadr and discussed with him the current situation in the country.

 

The prime minister also briefed the president about Pakistan’s participation in the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar and Minister for Climate Change Rana Muhammad Farooq would represent Pakistan in the conference.

 

Gilani also briefed Zardari about the energy situation in the country. The president complimented the prime minister, finance minister, coalition partners and the parliament on the approval of the fifth budget by the National Assembly.

 

The law and order situation in various parts of the country was also discussed during the meeting.Online adds: Talking to the prime minister, President Zardari said Pakistan wanted to cultivate relations with the international community, including the United States, on the basis of mutual respect and recognition of mutual interests. “We have stressed that US-Pak relations will progress in light of the recommendations of the Parliament,” he stated.

 

Zardari said the Pakistan People’s Party-led government was working to resolve issues of the masses as promised to them during the election campaign. “We are well aware of the problems being faced by the people due to power outages,” he said, directing the PM to immediately ensure end to unannounced loadshedding and ensure timely completion of power projects.

 

The president and the prime minister agreed on defending the system against unconstitutional steps and conspiracies against the democratic government and vowed that along with their coalition partners they would continue strengthening the democracy.Sources revealed that during the meeting that lasted for more than an hour, the two leaders expressed grave concern over the consequences of removing the democratic government.
