ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira was granted the portfolio of the Minister for Information and Broadcasting here on Wednesday.
Qamar Zaman Kaira, who took oath as the federal minister last week was born in Kharian on January 5, 1960. He had also served as Minister for Information and Broadcasting from March 14, 2009 to February 9, 2011. Previously, he had also served as Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Northern Areas, Minister for Information Technology and Governor of Gilgit-Baltistan during tenure of present coalition government. Kaira had his primary education from his local school at Lalamusa.
He passed his intermediate examinations from FG Degree College, Kharian Cantt and graduated from Forman Christian College University. He did his Masters of Arts (Philosophy) from University of the Punjab, Lahore and he also has a Masters degree in Political Sciences. Kaira was elected to National Assembly and became a Minister in the coalition government of PPP formed after 2008 elections. He is a senior leader of Pakistan Peoples Party, having won from his local constituency in Gujrat.
The other positions he held were President, Student Union, Federal Government Degree College, Kharian Cantt, Nazim, Union Council, Lala Musa, Opposition Leader District Council Gujrat, Member of National Assembly 2002-2007, Member of Public Accounts Committee, National Assembly 2002-2007, Chairman of Standing Committee SAFRON 2002-2007, Member of National Assembly on March 17, 2008.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani granted him portfolios of Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting.
