This refers to the news report, ‘Dengue fumigation: Punjab Health, Local Bodies, School secretaries made OSD’ (September 12). Fumigation at two schools in Punjab, which was supposed to kill the mosquito responsible for spreading the dengue virus, has left scores of students – all girls – unconscious.
The editorial ‘Deadly spray’ (September 14) has rightly pointed out that, “It is unclear why this should happen. We hope a full investigation will be conducted and that there will be no repetition of the kind of panic and physical pain created by this careless bout of fumigation spraying.” The provincial government should investigate the incident at the judicial level and take punitive action against the culprits in light of the inquiry. Moreover, it should be ensured that such incidents that cause uncalled for suffering to people do not occur in the future.
