Starting from Ramazan Pesco has switched off all streetlights in an attempt to ‘save energy’. That has resulted in total darkness in localities like Meena bazaar, Karim Pura bazaar, Shaheen bazaar, Chowk Shadi Pir, Muhallah Kotla Fil Banan, Tehsil, Hashtnagri, Sikandar Pura, etc, at night. The blind darkness feels like we are at war and there is some kind of restriction on even lighting up a matchstick as was done by the government during the 1965 war.
Pesco needs to be reminded that today streetlights are an important part of urban life – the most significant being that they are a check on street crimes. If Pesco wants to save energy it should launch a campaign to curb the excessive use of air conditioners and extra lights in offices so that energy can be saved in a real and effective manner. Switching off 25 Watt energy savers will not do much other than making people’s lives miserable.
