When it comes to building mega dams the federal government always dithers and takes refuge behind the lack of consensus. While the future of the Diamer-Bhasha dam is uncertain owing to the absence of a solid source of funding, the Kalabagh dam has become a victim of politics.
Pakistan has the potential of generating at least 40,000MW hydropower alone. The government keeps promising the nation that loadshedding would end by 2017 without telling us how much a unit of power will cost us. Hydel power is the cheapest source of energy but the federal government seems to lack the will to convince the federating units of the utility of mega dams.
