Every fault can be rectified if ruthless accountability is conducted at all governance levels. Karachi is in turmoil. Administrative apathy, unchecked violence, rampant corruption and no water – such is the order of the day in the biggest city and the economic hub of the country. The chief executive in any organisation is responsible for whatever happens or does not happen under his watch. When everything goes topsy-turvy the chief executive ought to be held accountable.
Nevertheless, the present lot of rulers will do nothing of the sort because that will shake the entire political system. Completion of five years in power is the measure of democratic success here. In their dictionaries performance does not matter. We need statesmen not incompetent politicians. The National Action Plan, which should have been the strategic focus of our entire anti-terrorism campaign, has been completely forgotten. Its non-implementation will lead us into a kind of forever war.
