The constitution has provided equal representation to the four provinces in the Senate: each province has 23 seats excluding the federal capital and Fata. A person of thirty years of age is qualified to contest the Senate election. In addition, he or she should be registered as a voter in the province from where he or she wants to take part in the election and also meets other criteria under Articles 62 and 63.
However, all major political parties have fielded candidates who are from a province other than the one from where they have filed their nomination papers. This is a violation of the prescribed rules and regulations. Political parties are requested to nominate those candidates who represent the same province from where they belong. If political parties do not take action on their own then the Supreme Court should take suo motu notice on the issue.
