Maulana Fazalur Rehman recently said that if the current prime minister was also disqualified, it would destabilise democracy in the country. In other words, in the eyes of Maulana, the ruler’s corruption and defiance of the Supreme Court’s orders are not big issues; what is important is the seat of a prime minister. One can easily presume what would be the fate of rule of law in the country if religious parties get a chance to rule.
But then a nation gets the rulers it deserves. And the recent by-election in Multan has already shown us that people would elect a gaddi-nasheen irrespective of his alleged involvement in corruption.
