Through one of its orders, the Supreme Court recently suspended the membership of some parliamentarians who held dual citizenship, terming it against our constitution. Now, the government and its coalition partners are trying to change this law – which forbids dual-nationality holders from contesting elections – to allow parliamentarians to hold dual citizenship. Given the fact that the PPP and its allies have a majority in parliament, they can push this new law through probably without much effort. But this should not be done in a hurry and at least a proper discussion should take place in this regard. There must be a good reason why our constitution does not allow dual-nationality holders to sit in parliament and influence decision-making as these parliamentarians also become members of various committees such as the Defence Cabinet Committee.
