On Sunday morning, I and my family started our journey from Lahore to Gujrat to attend a wedding ceremony. The traffic came to a halt when we reached Sadhoke as demonstrators protesting against loadshedding had blocked the entire road. Youngsters of ages 10-15, holding sticks and rods, shouting slogans and burning tyres, were also part of the protest. They were being controlled by a few adults. We were able to move forward after an hour, only to stop again at Kamoke. The driver pulled the car to the other side of the road under a tree to wait for the protest to end. While we were waiting, I noticed a man in white clothes driving a white car, recording the scenes with a camera. I could see that there was no police, not even traffic police, present on the road. It was clearly a staged demonstration where youngsters were getting instructions on their phones. We had to drive back to Lahore after waiting at Kamoke for three hours.
I am disgusted at the childish manner in which our political parties are behaving these days. It seems they haven’t learnt any lessons even after suffering so much at the hands of military dictators. They should not be the ones paving the way for the next dictator. They may have differences with each other but they shouldn’t fight their political battles at the cost of the people of this country.
