KARACHI: The school children of Karachi will remain deprived of summer camp activities this year too during their vacations, ‘The News’ has learnt.
KMC did not organise the summer camp last year due to delay in the completion of swimming pool’s development work at its Kashmir Road sports complex.
The KMC sports department used to organise a summer camp for school children during their vacations against nominal charges and a lot of sporting activities were held.
Swimming and skating used to be the chief attraction of the summer camp.
KMC has one of the biggest sports infrastructures in the country.
The swimming pool is a rare facility for children of middle class segment of society. But last year due to renovation work at the swimming pool, it was not organized.
Only a few days are left before the summer vacations, but there is no one in the KMC sports department to confirm when construction work would be completed.
Some officials disclosed on the condition of anonymity that there was no hope of a summer camp this year too due to delay in the opening of swimming pool.
When asked if summer camp could be held without swimming, the official said it would not attract many children.
They said it was chiefly swimming which attracts children to participate in the summer camp.
But summer camp is not being organised at the Women Sports Complex, where the swimming pool and other sports facilities are ready.
Work on Landhi-Malir Sports Complex has been completed and it has a swimming pool but due to the lack of initiative on the part of KMC, it has not been inaugurated yet.
KMC has a rich history with respect to sports activities.
Parents and children have appealed to the administrator KMC to take notice of the situation and issue directives to the sports department to organise summer camps.
