BRIDGETOWN, Barbados: Fast swing bowling dominated the first session on the second day of the final Test between West Indies and England in Barbados on Saturday.
Six wickets fell for just 54 across the end of one innings and start of the next. Jerome Taylor bundled out England’s last three batsmen for 10 runs before James Anderson responded in kind by making major inroads into West Indies’ top order with another mesmeric new-ball spell.
Although considerably less than they would have wanted, judgments on the value of England’s 257 needed to wait. The early stages of West Indies’ reply suggested it was more than competitive as Anderson resumed where he had left off from his match-defining burst on the final morning in Grenada.
He continued his hold over Kriagg Braithwaite with a perfect full outswinger second ball which was edged to third slip then in his third over, Anderson ended Shai Hope’s debut innings — which had begun with a first-ball edge wide of third slip — when the 21-year-old nicked very low to first slip.
Alastair Cook, who moments earlier had dropped a chest-high chance to give Darren Bravo a life on 0 off Stuart Broad, was confident he had claimed the catch but as so often it went upstairs. Cook, himself, had benefited from third-umpire uncertainty when he nudged to short leg on 22 yesterday but this time the catch was given. The difference between the two was difficult to see, although interestingly it was said that the on-field umpires thought Cook’s catch was clean and wanted reassurance.
The best, though, from Anderson was still to come as he dissected Marlon Samuels with the precision of a surgeon.
Samuels was keen to counter-attack, dispatching two booming drives off Broad, but Anderson had the ball on a string: five outswingers, of varying width outside off, one which beat the edge, were followed by an inswinger which Samuels did not spot, at least until he was beyond the point of no return as he padded up.
England had resumed on 240 for 7 with eyes on 300 with the pitch already showing signs of turn, but fell for 257 as Taylor claimed the three remaining wickets.
In all, from Moeen’s run out yesterday, their last six wickets went for 68. Denesh Ramdin had employed nearly 47 overs of spin on the opening day, but after Samuels completed the unfinished over from the first evening — when he removed Cook — it was all pace in the hands of Taylor and Shannon Gabriel.
Having not allowed a boundary, Taylor removed Chris Jordan with a thin edge down the leg side. Jordan reviewed, although not straight away which hinted that he knew his fate, and the evidence was not conclusive either way so the on-field decision stood.
Broad scored his first runs of the series, including a drive through the covers and a slash over the slips, before having his middle stump removed by Taylor.
