KARACHI: Sindh retained the title when they overcame Army 28-27 in a nail-biting finish in the final of 14th National Women Netball championship at Pakistan Sports Complex in Islamabad on Tuesday.
In the sweating affair, both sides played with great vigour and were going neck to neck.
However, Sindh kept their cool and managed a well-deserved victory in the end.
Qurat-ul-Ain, Umama Qadri, Nayab, Hina, Humaira and Fatima did a fine job for the victors.
Earlier, Higher Education Commission (HEC) got bronze medal when they bulldozed Punjab 26-7 in the play-off for the third position.
Sadaf played a key role in HEC’s victory.
The winners were handed over a purse of Rs50,000, while the runners-up went away with Rs30,000. The bronze medallists got Rs 20,000.
Pakistan Netball Federation’s (PNF) president Syed Shaharyar Ali distributed the prizes and handed over trophies to the leading sides.
Punjab, WAPDA, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, FATA and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) were the other teams in the competitions.
An official of the Sindh Netball Association lashed out at the Sindh Sports Board (SSB) for not supporting the team.
“SSB did not even give our players the track suits. But in spite of all this our team once again won the title by beating departmental teams like Army, WAPDA and HEC which have been provided all sorts of facilities,” the official said.
“We contacted SSB several times for financial help but it did not respond which is discouraging for the sport,” the official said.
