KARACHI: Pakistan had to be content with a silver medal when they lost to India in the high-octane final of the Sub-Zonal Asian Volleyball Council (AVC) Beach Volleyball Continental Cup in Maldives on Saturday.
In the finals, Pakistan A team — featuring Mubashir Raza and Riaz — defeated India A team 2-1. However in the second showdown, Pakistan B team — having Ismail Khan and Riaz Khan — went 1-2 down against India B.
After the tie, as per rules, a golden match was held between the two countries in which India prevailed over Pakistan 2-1 to wear the crown.
The set scores were 20-22, 21-18 and 15-12.
Maldives ended with bronze medal in the six-nation event. Mubashir Raza of Pakistan was declared the best player of the tournament.
Pakistan Volleyball Federation’s (PVF) president Mohammad Yaqoob said that the tournament had provided PVF a hope to excel both in indoor and beach volleyball.
“If we get enough resources, we can reach the victory stand in both the Asian and World championships,” he said. “We can hope to play in the Olympics if we are helped by the government and corporate sector,” he added.
