Zubair clinches under-13 title

KARACHI: Zubair Raja clinched the title of under-13 category of the 22nd STA Development series ranking tennis championship at Bath Island Club on Monday.


He beat Bilal Imran Lohya 6-2, 0-6, 10-7 in the final. In the semi-finals, Lohya had defeated Muhammad Nouman Aftab 7-5, 7-5. In the semi-finals of men’s singles, Fahim Ramzan beat Bilal Soomro 7-5, 6-7, 10-8.


In the under-17 semi-finals, Muhammad Raza Sawani got walkover against Hania Naveed, while Ibrahim Iltifat defeated Saad Muhammad Ali 2-0 (retired). In the under-15 singles semi-finals, Zubair Raja overpowered Muhammad Ahmed 7-5, 2-6, 11-9.


In the quarter-finals Zubair Raja thrashed Ebad Sarwar 6-0, 6-1. Hasheesh won the tile of under-11 by beating Farzan 6-3, 6-0, who had smashed Abdullah Ahmadani 8-1 in the semi-finals. The title of under-9 category was clinched by Farzan Ahmed who defeated Muhammad Yahya 8-6.


Karachi Academies suffer defeats in hockey tourney


KARACHI: Karachi Academies failed to win any of their matches on the opening day of 3rd Prof Syed Fida Hussain Shah PHF Inter-Academy Hockey Championship on Monday in Abbottabad.


Lahore Academy recorded a convincing 3-1 victory over Karachi Academy I. Lahore took a 3-0 with lead with Ahad Afzal, Naveed and Moeen registering their names on the scoresheet. Kamil scored a consolatory goal for Karachi I in the second half.


Peshawar defeated Karachi Academy II 2-1. Farman Hussain and Samiullah scored for the victors, while Ehtesham Furqan scored for Karachi II.


In the last match of the day, Gojra recovered from a goal down to beat hosts Abbottabad 4-3 after a thrilling encounter. Hanan Anwar, Faizan, Hassan Saleem and M Ramzan scored one goal each for Gojra, while Ramiz, Azan Ali and Atif scored for Abbottabad.


KASB edge Bank Islami

KARACHI: KASB defeated Bank Islami by three wickets in the Q Mobile 2nd Bankers T20 Champions League here at the Rashid Latif Cricket Academy Ground on Monday.


Bank Islami posted 137-7 with Shoaib Akhtar hitting 66 with two sixes and seven boundaries. Anees Shaikh and Shahmir Khattak claimed two wickets each.


KASB achieved the target after losing seven batters. Tariq Ali Murad and Zulfiqar Lehri scored 33 runs each. Abdul Majid Shah got three wickets.


Meanwhile, HSBC overwhelmed Bank Al Baraka by seven wickets. Bank Al Baraka accumulated 136-9 with Mansoor Ahmed scoring 41. Imran Bashir clinched three wickets.


HSBC raced to the target after losing three wickets. Brenton Barnard blasted 52 not out while Imran Bashir remained unbeaten on 41.


MA Shah Night Cricket Trophy in Ramadan

KARACHI: Asghar Ali Shah Memorial Sports Foundation is organising Dr Mohammad Ali Shah Night Cricket Trophy 2013 from the first of Ramadan-ul-Mubarak here at the Asghar Ali Shah Stadium. The event will be held under floodlights. As many as 16 teams will be taking part in the show. The winners will be handed over a purse of Rs400,000, while the runners-up will be given Rs200,000. Prizes for the best batsman, best bowler and man-of-the-tournament will also be given. All matches will start at 10:00 pm daily.


Bath Island championship from June 24

KARACHI: Karachi Tennis Association (south) will organise 3rd Bath Island Open Ranking Tennis Championship from June 24o July 1 at Bath Island Tennis Club. The singles events include men’s, ladies, and juniors under-17. The last date of entry is June 22.
