PESHAWAR: In an apparent warning to hundreds of traders and shoppers, particularly women, terrorists struck at the busy Shafi Market in Saddar area here on Tuesday with a low-intensity bomb. Sources said at least four people were injured in the explosion, caused by around 500 grams of explosives that were placed near the counter of a shop. The sources said the explosion was triggered through a remote-controlled device. The blast occurred at 12:10 pm when the narrow street was jam-packed with thousands of male and female visitors and shoppers. There were also reports that the explosion was not an act of terrorism but was caused by a faulty UPS in a shop in the old Shafi Market. “We are looking into both the possibilities. It could be an act of terror as well as a fault in the UPS,” Senior Superintendent of Police Operations, Peshawar, Ijaz Ahmad, told The News.
