PM proposes three names for CEC

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani on Monday proposed three names to the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, for appointment of new chief election commissioner (CEC).The PM proposed the names of Justice (retd) Munir A Sheikh, Justice (retd) Amirul Mulk Mengal and Justice (retd) Zahid Qurban Alvi.Now, the opposition leader after consultation will finalise the name.

PHC confirms bail to Russian woman in theft case

PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Monday confirmed bail in a theft case to Kristina Petrochenkova, whose named was changed to Parveen after she converted to Islam and married a Pakistani man.
The Russian woman had filed interim pre-arrest bail application in the PHC after her Pakistani husband Ikramullah Khan charged her in a theft case on March 10. A single bench of Chief Justice Dost Muhammad Khan confirmed the pre-arrest bail after hearing both the parties and a state lawyer in the case.
Wassan in Dubai for treatment

DUBAI: Sindh Home Minister Manzoor Wassan Monday landed in Dubai from Karachi. Wassan arrived in the UAE on one-month’s medical leave for treatment of his lingering backache. He is under treatment of renowned doctor Dr Imtiaz Hashmi.

PPP not to be intimidated by Nawaz threats, says Khosa

LAHORE: Punjab Governor Latif Khan Khosa said on Monday the PPP government would not be intimidated by threats of Nawaz Sharif of a long march, movement of protest.In an interview to a news channel, he said the PML-N could never come to power with the support of any undemocratic forces. He said the people of the country had become more sagacious and politically matured and would reject the PML-Nís movement of protest. ìThousands of brave and staunch workers of the PPP will also foil its so-called protest with their political acumen and strength. Nawaz Sharif, in fact, believes in subversive politics and he only wants to retain Takht-e-Lahore,î he added. He said Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani would complete his tenure and ruled out any political upset.

SL Muslims call for protection
COLOMBO: Sri Lanka's main Muslim party called on the government on Monday to protect religious minorities after protests by Buddhist monks demanding that a 60-year-old mosque be relocated. The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, which is a member of the ruling coalition, said it opposed shifting the mosque in Dambulla, 150-km north of Colombo, saying this would be "disastrous" for the country. The monks argued that the mosque was inside temple land and should be demolished while the Muslims maintain that they have been offering prayers there since the mid 1940s.

Basic items prices to be cut in budget

ISLAMABAD: The government wants to lower prices of some of basic items, which are directly linked to the poor, in the forthcoming budget to get public support for its election campaign, sources say. The items include from foodstuffs to gas cylinders. Attempts are being made to present a tax-free budget and only luxurious items will be taxed.Circles close to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) say the party will hold severe protests inside and outside the parliament before the presentation of the federal budget, which is likely to be presented on May 25.

NAB initiates inquiry against MD HBFC

KARACHI: The NAB and secret agencies have initiated a probe into the appointment of Syed Azhar Abbas Jaffri as managing director of the House Building Finance Corporation (HBFC) despite being cancellation of his Pakistani citizenship.The interior ministry had provided a list, carrying names of those who had surrendered their Pakistani citizenship due to their dual nationalities, to the National Assembly’s Standing Committee in February.The list also carried the name of Syed Azhar Abbas Jaffri. Due to this, NAB and other agencies have started investigation into the matter.

DG ISI calls on PM

ISLAMABAD: ISI Director General Lieutenant General Zaheerul Islam on Monday called on Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani. In the meeting, they discussed the overall security situation in the country.
